*What would you Believe?

Where Worlds Collide and Galaxies Sing...

All too often people take their anonymity for granted, posting their real identity on line for all to see. But then so many believe they are protected from the wrongdoings of others, that they think they are safe, even when they do post personal information. Yet what would you believe of what they post about themselves? For example, what would you believe of me? Would you believe I'm a 44 year old man from Florida? Would you believe I'm a 39 year old woman from Idaho? Would you believe I'm a 35 year old man from Wisconsin? Would you believe I'm a 27 year old woman from New Jersey? Would you believe I'm a 22 year old man from California? Would you believe I'm a 15 year old girl from Oklahoma? Would you believe any of those at all or would you assume that none of them were the truth because I specifically listed them? Then there are names. Is my name Kathy Armstrong? What about David Buchanan? Or perhaps is it Andrea Smythe? Or maybe even Robert Cole? Or is my name something else entirely? You don't know because I choose not to tell you, and those who may know are sworn to secrecy about my name and whether they know what it is.

Thus is the prize and the curse of anonymity - no one knows the truth so they assume that you are either lying or that you may be telling the truth. You only know that which people are willing to tell you and just by courtesy you have to believe they are telling the truth until you are given definitive proof to the contrary. But then there are those who have been caught in lies and thus are required to prove their claims lest no one believe them. Whether they know your identity or not, the name you use among others holds the shroud of your reputation, and as such your actions dictate your reputation among others, no matter what words, true or false, are said of you.

Ah yes, then there are those who spread rumors and false hoods of others, those who desire attention and feed on drama while making others suffer for their amusement. These people very quickly reveal themselves for what they truly are, and the intelligent among us see their true colors and reject their lies. But unfortunately they also feed on the innocent and trusting, believing them stupid and easily swayed when the truth is these poor victims of spite simply try to see the good in others rather than living their lives jaded and mistrusting of others.

I will say this of myself: Those who truly know me know that I am bluntly honest and at times aggressively straight forward. I seek the truth in what's around me and when a question comes to mind I seek the answer like a hunter stalking prey until I find the truth. I am also one who cares for others and can be generous to my own detriment, though I have grown careful with whom I am generous. And when I love someone, it is with all that I am. I do not lie to them, I do not cheat on or betray them, I do not steal from them, and I do not strike them in anger. These are things I ask in return, though sadly few are ever willing to give it. Thus I have a few friends whom I consider family, acquaintances I know and trust to varying degrees, but no mate and for my requirements of one, I do not expect to be courted. Of course, it does not matter if one is friend, family, acquaintance, or mate, my requirements are the same: do not lie to me, do not steal from me, do not betray me (includes cheating in the case of a mate), and do not hit me. Violate any of those and you will be removed from my life. It is sad that so few are willing to abide by such simple and straight forward rules. Are there really so few truly honest people in the world?

Eh, over the course of the years, really, in real life and on line. I've been on line since 1998 in Infospace chat's Dark Room (and occasionally the Hot Tub) and I've seen all kinds of people from the honest to the worst. There are times I wonder what's wrong with humanity and I wonder how the hell we managed to survive this long. >.<

I still think of you as "my favorite hit woman". You tell it like it is. I so enjoy when you post journals like these. You write what other people are thinking but don't take the time or have the eloquence to write it.

**chuckles** Why thank you very much. I figure it this way, if I don't say it, it's pretty unlikely anyone else will (except maybe my bro Catalyst), so I may as well say it and get it out there. Some don't like how blunt and up front I am, and that's fine, they don't have to read what I post. But then people like to go out of their way to be offended so they can raise a big stink over it. **shakes head** People simply need to grow up, seriously... I'm just glad that there are some who actually appreciate the truths I post here. **smiles**

I can't bring myself to pretend. It's totally useless. People assume that with my name, I'm a guy and I'm not. It shocks them when I tell them I'm a woman. I don't lie about my job or what my interests are. I see why people do it for secondary gain or attention seeking behavior, but to me, it's pointless.

And I completely agree. There's no reason to lie to people, there are simply things I just don't reveal about myself. Better to say nothing at all than to lie.

On the Internet, like you said, it's VERY possible for people to put false identities. So caution is essential. Unfortunately, people don't always use logic and caution. In my opinion, if you're posting explicit sexual pictures and then get mad that there's a freak stalking your page, I'm sorry, you walked into that one.

I've also heard of several people get scammed on dating sites because people posted false pictures/info. To me, they should've known better! You really have to use judgment in these things. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

As for me, I NEVER give out personal info like address, phone number, email, etc (Though someone on fan fiction.net gave his address in a review. >.>)

I consider you a great friend here on DA. <333 You're very intelligent, sweet and don't put up with any mess. There needs to be more people like that in the world.

**chuckles** Totally agreed there.

Yup, yet there are those who just lack the common sense to think before they act.

>.< Yeah, that's just asking for trouble that.

Why thank you very much. **hugs** I really do appreciate that.

I've spent most of my life being accused of things I haven't done, and not being able to prove that I didn't do them... This was my life when I was young and lied to gain advantage, and it's my life now that I'm older and try to be honest. And because of how different from normal I am, and how unusual I've made my life, most people actually believe me MORE when I lie than when I tell the truth... How screwed up is that?

It is an interesting line of thought. Such as me for example: I claim to be a female from Michigan. Or am I really a guy who lives somewhere else? I don't like to give out super personal information (like my real name or real location) but, when it comes to the internet, I guess one has to be a little cautious as you said. You never know if people on here or on any other site are malicious in nature and are just trying to use you/abuse you. Which is sad to hear. :(
I consider you a friend on here, and I really mean that. I hope it means something to you as well. We may not have the same opinions on everything, but that's what makes us think, makes us more aware of what comes out of our mouths. I just hope one day there will come a time where people won't have to worry about being super protective of everything they own, including simple personal information like our names on the internet, or anywhere. People shouldn't have to constantly watch their backs wherever they go.
Especially on a website where millions of people come here to enjoy and share the awesomeness of art.

Yeah, I know. I am not worried about saying that I'm a 38 year old female living in Washington, but I will not give out what town I'm in (most think I live in Seattle anyway) nor will I state my name other than the fact that I go by Leathurkatt. I'm pretty certain I'm not the only 38 year old woman living in Washington, let alone in Seattle. XD

Yes it does. When others choose to count me as friend or family, I embrace that. And yes, no two people are ever going to be of the same mind on everything, that's the nature of individuality. It's often nice for me to find someone with a different view who is willing to discuss things with mutual respect and open minds. Arguments over points of view are simply pointless and only breed hostility. I try to give facts more than opinion, and though I do give facts with proof to back them up or at the very least a list of sources people can check out for themselves, I still get people lashing out at me for either lying, shoving my opinions in people's faces, or giving irrelevant information. >.<

I normally hate calling people out, but I have three examples from the same person who informed me that my facts were irrelevant and childishly blocked me when I told him that tracing is theft. **rolls eyes** I just don't understand some people...
Explaining facts shown in canon sources only to be told that the comics are irrelevant --> [link]
Again explaining canon information and told my facts are irrelevant --> [link]
Trying to explain that tracing is theft and theft is illegal and being threatened in return --> [link]

Haha, true story on that.

:) Good to hear. It is how people are sometimes unfortunately. :\ I guess if no one ever learns to compromise then people will continue to fight over mundane things for forever.

Yikes. D: Not fun at all I see. :O

Yeah, and he's not the only one. There's another guy on DA, Tramp-Graphics, who is a total lunatic in my opinion. I blocked him for being a total egocentric idiot and for attacking me when I offered a friendly "That's well drawn, but this is what's actually canon" comment. And his friend decided to get bitchy at me too. I only commented to her on her page because I couldn't reply where she initially commented to me. I ended up blocking her too because she was basically white knighting for Tramp and belittling me while refusing to actually read what I said. Deranged Galvatron is just an incompetent lazy idiot. Steamstrike is actually a friend of mine.

Then of course, there's this LotteBubbles person. You see, I don't care if they like or hate what I write, all I care about is if they actually honestly read it. O.o You would be surprised how many people actually refuse to completely read something and then bitch at me that it's wrong or that they hate something I wrote. >.< This one I blocked for being utterly stupid. I'm sure you can see why.

Hn.

Interesting. I know you and Steamstrike are good friends on here (and you two are pretty awesome people too btw). I don't know the others.

I... guess my opinion (take it as you like) on all that strangeness is that people have different views about "how cannon could have been", and they argue over it.

Ha, it seems you just are a magnet for troublesome people sometimes, eh? ^^;

Sometimes. I just get tired of people claiming their fan created ideas are canon when they aren't. >.< Doing so is the same as lying and I personally despise liars...
