Where Worlds Collide and Galaxies Sing...

Through the years of my life, I have seen all sorts of people paraded around like some kind of “Cirque de Macabre”, most of them lost in a haze of lifelessness, merely going through the motions, an imitation of life but not truly alive.  Their eyes remain empty and soulless pools of darkness, their movements little more than those of some programmed automaton as they wander to and fro, their gaze downcast, not seeing what is around them.  I often wonder how they got that way when children are so often bright little sparks of life and imagination, looking at the world in wide-eyed wonder, desperate to learn and understand the magical world that lay sprawling before their glittering and eager eyes.  I think it’s because of the oppressive fear that consumes the adults around them, terrified these children will come to harm, or worse, if they continue in their naturally curious and adventurous ways.  So these adults suppress the eagerness in their eyes, cage their adventurous spirit, and snuff out the fire of curiosity; they tell their children that their imagination is a dangerous monster that must be forever locked away, that the world is an evil and cruel place they can only survive, not live and thrive in.  Those children with stronger will and spirit are forcibly caged, told they are sick or damaged, that the drugs and restraints are for their own good as the fearful ones assert their control and confinement upon the wild of heart.

Still, some can not, will not be tamed.  They fight through the oppression, casting aside the phobic bars of conformity, and no matter how their wings are broken and stripped bare, they take that leap of faith with a defiant cry, spread their tattered wings, and fly.  Some meet their end in the attempt, their wings unable to carry them.  Some find they survive the fall only to be caged again, whether by their own fears or the fears of others.  Some escape to true freedom, soaring on the wind.  It is these battered and torn little phoenixes that stand out in the mass of soulless zombies, shining like bright suns in the pitch darkness.  They are awake, they are alive, they are free.

I look back upon my own life and wonder, “Am I one of them?  Am I just another soulless, lifeless thing trudging along in a morbid imitation of life?  Or am I one of those shining birds of fire and thunder with their glittering eyes and shimmering wings, dancing for the shear joy of being alive?”  It is then that certain simple truths occur to me – the soulless ones fear the ones who can still dance, while the free not only recognize each other, they fearlessly embrace one another, dancing together as one.  I do not fear the fire and thunder; I embrace it without fear or hesitation.  I dance in the revelry of life.  I am free.

I wrote this one evening (the evening prior to the journal's date stamp, actually) while sitting at a bus transit station as a random muse/epiphany came to me.  Of course, these were things I had known for much of my life, but articulating these thoughts in such a manner as they are written here was a spark of muse that struck me, as it does from time to time, while sitting somewhere observing the world from my own odd little perspective.  I thought some of you might enjoy reading this since you watch me here and seem to like the things I post randomly on DA.

Fantastic journal as always. You've broached a tough topic. It's sad to see deadened eyes. Eagerness is often hammered out at a young age, so that people can conform into a society designed for profits before people. It happens at such a young age, it's difficult to escape, and there is so much pressure on parents to conform these days with the threat of loosing their kids if they don't vaccinate them etc.

Not conforming leads to a very turbulent, and difficult journey. Like you say, some just don't make it. Glad to know you're one of the ones that has :D
