Where Worlds Collide and Galaxies Sing...

Now, I am not one of those weeaboo fantards who decry all remakes of older movies and claim that all remakes suck, nor am I one of those who get nasty over remakes of my favourite movies.  While I will agree that some remakes and reboots do indeed suck ass, some turn out better than the first (or second, third, etc) time around.  For example, the Batman remakes with Cristian Bale ("Batman Begins" "The Dark Knight" "Dark Knight Rises") I feel were certainly a class better than the 1990's versions that had several different people playing Batman (and I am reserving judgment on "Arkham Knight" for the time being); as a huge fan of the original "Planet of the Apes" movie series, I greatly enjoyed the new versions ("Planet of the Apes and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes") and can't wait to see "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" coming out in July 2014; having grown up with the 1976 "King Kong" movie and loved it, the 2005 version I dearly loved as it maintained a lot from both the 1933 and 1976 versions while making Kong himself more believable as a giant silver-back gorilla; and as a lifetime Tolkein fan who grew up with the animated movies of "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings", I am absolutely loving the live action trilogies and can't wait for part 3 of "The Hobbit" later this year.  But some movies should never be redone.

One such movie is "The Crow" from 1994.  The main character, Eric Draven, was played by the late Brandon Lee, son of the famous martial artist and actor, Bruce Lee.  Brandon literally died making this movie and several scenes had to be done with body doubles and CGI following his death in order to complete it.  I saw this movie at the theater when it first came out, I was 19 years old.  I own legitimate copies of "The Crow" on VHS, DVD, and Bluray, I own legitimate CDs of the Soundtrack and the Score for this movie, and I even have a McFarlain figure of Eric Draven, an unopened bottle of "Undead Cola" from "City of Angels", and several post cards from the original movie (not pictured).  While I did not care so much for the later movies that continued the story James O'Barr wrote, I let them be as none of them were remakes of the first one.  Now I find out that Luke Evans has been cast as Eric Draven for a remake of this movie.  Don't get me wrong, I like Luke Evans as an actor; he was great as Bard in "The Hobbit" and absolutely brilliant as Owen Shaw in "Fast and Furious 6".  While he may be very capable of portraying the iconic Eric Draven beautifully (and indeed visually fits the part well), to remake "The Crow" is a literal slap in the face to the man who died as Eric Draven and belittles not only Brandon Lee's talent and ability as an actor while he lived, but his sacrifice as well.  Yes, his death was a tragic accident that never should have happened, but to blatantly push aside and trivialize his memory and what he gave as an actor and a human being is very heartless and wrong.

When an actor literally dies during the filming of a movie as Brandon Lee did, that movie should not be redone by others at any point in time.  It is disrespectful to the actor who died, their family and friends, and the fans who cherish their work.  This new version of "The Crow" has no release date set as far as I have found, and honestly, I hope it stays that way.

And to Luke Evans - if you are reading this, know that this is nothing against you as an actor and a person.  Had Brandon survived, I would not speak against a remake of "The Crow" and likely would very much enjoy seeing your interpretation of the character, Eric Draven.  But I must stand by my views on this and ask that this movie not be redone.  I sincerely hope you understand my reasons why.
