Where Worlds Collide and Galaxies Sing...

At around noon today, beloved actor and comedian, Robin Williams, was found dead in his California home.  Preliminary reports say suicide by suffocation, but an autopsy should determine the truth of what really happened.  Those who knew him said he had been dealing with depression, but that he was also slated to reprise his role as Teddy Roosevelt in "Night at the Museum 3" and as the title character for "Mrs Doubtfire 2".  He was dearly loved by fans the world over for his sharp wit and even sharper intelligence, as well as his warm and friendly nature both on and off screen.

I grew up watching him in all sorts of films and TV shows.  He's only just over a month younger than my mother (born June 17th the same year as Robin, who's birthday was July 21st, 1951).  Mom and I both are shocked and saddened by the loss of such a brilliant man, and all of Hollywood is devastated by his death.  Love and hugs go out to his family, friends, and fans in this painful time, for all of us.

Below are five questions posed in the Robin Williams Tribute on dA, along with my answers.

1. Do you think Robin Williams could have remained a vital comedian and comic actor even as he battled Parkinson’s disease? Have you battled disease while pursuing your art?
Answer: Yes I think he could have, especially if you look at Michael J Fox who has been battling Parkinson's for years now.

2. Do you think that all great artists possess hidden “darkness” of the heart or mind that adds a powerful poignancy to their work? The funnier the comic, the more intense the suppressed dark side?
Answer: This can be true, but is not necessarily so.  We all have a side of ourselves that is joyful, funny, and happy, but we also have a side that is dark and sometimes even scary.

3. Are highly intelligent or very talented people better able to hide their misery from loved ones, thus making it all the harder to “read” them and help them?
Answer: I tend to think so, yes.  The greater the intelligence and talents, especially in acting, the easier it is for them to hide things about themselves from others.

4. Do you think it’s possible for successful artists to fight the allure of the more exotic dangerous diversions, deal with chronic depression, deal with serious diseases, yet still continue to create art successfully? Is a strong community a key to avoiding these hazards?
Answer: Yes it is possible, and a close knit network of friends, colleagues, and family are critically important for success in conquering depression, hardship,  and the dark temptations that can harm or even destroy an artist.

5. Almost every comedic interaction from Robin Williams produced an immediate sense of well–being for the audience. Are there works of visual art or literature that have this effect on you?
Answer: Yes actually, though given my wide ranging and somewhat darker interests, one might not think so.  But such dark images show me that I am not alone and that I don't have to be alone, which helps keep me centered and out of the depression pit.  Plus, laughter has a way of always making you feel better about everything.
