Where Worlds Collide and Galaxies Sing...

I made those two stamps to hopefully get across the point of what it really means to be a Goth.  I am a Goth.  I'm actually a lot of things, including an old school Metal Head, Artist, Writer, Book Hound, Intellectual, Pagan, and other things.  Goth is just one of the things I am which happens to encompass a fair number of the others as well, given the actualities of BEING a Goth.  But what IS a Goth and how does someone KNOW they are a Goth?  How does one identify a Goth?  Well, there is one person I came across that has answered those questions fairly well, and I shall share with you some of what Azhram has said with a few of my own thoughts in addition.  Feel free to poke at the rest of her little essay to find out more.

What is a Goth?
If most (10 or more) of the following statements are true, it is VERY likely that you are Goth. If the first statement is false, you aren't Goth. No, not even if all 16 of the rest are true. Of course, you would be readily accepted and most welcome amongst Goths for your strength of individuality and ability to appreciate the culture in general and themselves in particular.

  1. You feel the need to spend a lot of time creating things (music, art, poetry, philosophies, stories and the like)
  2. Your creative efforts are often described as dark, shocking, scary, morbid or strange
  3. You like museums and cultural centers
  4. You understand and even enjoy Shakespeare, Shelley, Browning or some other similar work without having to read the Cliffe Notes
  5. You know the difference between nihilism and existentialism, even if you don't really live by either
  6. You really, truly enjoy music of many kinds
  7. You are a very sensual person (aware of color, texture, sound, taste and scent)
  8. You don't understand why the people around you spend so much time watching TV
  9. You don't feel comfortable looking just like everyone else you know
  10. You do feel comfortable just being yourself, even if no one else around is anything like you
  11. You wonder "why" a lot, and come up with some interesting answers
  12. You wonder "how" a lot, and often figure it out on your own
  13. You don't just reject something because you don't understand it
  14. You base your opinions of people on who they are and what they do rather than what they look like
  15. You are not afraid of the unknown
  16. You are not afraid of the dark
  17. You are afraid of mediocrity
Here are my answers to these 17 points.
  1. You feel the need to spend a lot of time creating things (music, art, poetry, philosophies, stories and the like).
TOTALLY!  I come from a very arts and crafts creative family and being a third generation artist as well as an aspiring writer and someone who prefers making or building my own things like jewelery, clothes, and furniture; yes, this is very true of me.
  2. Your creative efforts are often described as dark, shocking, scary, morbid or strange.
GUILTY!  Some of you have seen photos of my collections, my art, and other things, and yes, there are quite a few things that others would consider dark or even morbid.
  3. You like museums and cultural centers.
I love art and culture.  In fact, I got into Cultural Anthropology Studies BECAUSE of the art and/or music of a given culture, such as Ancient Egypt, Feudal Japan, Pre-Christian Norse and Celtic, and American Indian Tribal cultures.
  4. You understand and even enjoy Shakespeare, Shelley, Browning or some other similar work without having to read the Cliffe Notes.
Muchly.  Even Edgar Allan Poe.  I love that kind of thing.  XD
  5. You know the difference between nihilism and existentialism, even if you don't really live by either.
Yes, I do know and understand what they are and the differences between them.  Nihilism is the viewpoint that traditional morals, ideas, beliefs, values, et al are utterly baseless and worthless to the point that any objective ground of moral truth is a lie.  Conversely, Existentialism centers on the individual existence within the universe and the absolute responsibility of the individual for all acts of free will regardless of any knowledge (or lack there of) of right or wrong.  I tend to lean more towards Existentialism, myself really.
  6. You really, truly enjoy music of many kinds.
I've got one word for you - Audiophile.  Nuff said.
  7. You are a very sensual person (aware of color, texture, sound, taste and scent).
    Can we say UNDERSTATEMENT?  O.o
  8. You don't understand why the people around you spend so much time watching TV.
Indeed.  While I love TV shows and movies, I actually don't spend all that much time watching TV.  I get in the mood to watch something, I'll watch it ON MY OWN TIME and WITHOUT COMMERCIALS.  >.<  Seriously...
  9. You don't feel comfortable looking just like everyone else you know.
The whole fashion thing and I REALLY do not get along... at all...  I wear what I like and what I feel comfortable wearing; the rest of the world can kiss the darkest part of my lily white if they don't like it.  Period.
  10. You do feel comfortable just being yourself, even if no one else around is anything like you.
Yup, pretty much.  I am me and I can only be me.  Don't like it, don't let the door kick you in the ass on your way out.
  11. You wonder "why" a lot, and come up with some interesting answers.
Hence my continuous habit of RESEARCHING EVERYTHING.  XD
  12. You wonder "how" a lot, and often figure it out on your own.
See No. 11.  **chuckles**  Plus my habit of taking things apart and deconstructing things since I was 2 years old.  Yeah...
  13. You don't just reject something because you don't understand it.
If I don't understand something, I dig deeper until I DO understand it.  If I get frustrated with it, I set it aside and come back to it later until I figure it out.
  14. You base your opinions of people on who they are and what they do rather than what they look like.
I could care less what someone looks like (some of my ex boyfriends are proof of that).  I judge actions and intentions, not superficial bullshit.
  15. You are not afraid of the unknown.
XD  It's the unknown that makes me research and dig deeper to find out what, who, where, when, how, why!  Fear of the unknown?  HA!
  16. You are not afraid of the dark.
Actually, I prefer the dark.  I'm nocturnal by nature and have rather excellent night vision.  XD
  17. You are afraid of mediocrity.
Not so much afraid of it as I am annoyed by it, really.

So, am I a Goth?  I think we can safely and unanimously say "YES!" to that one.  XD

1: Oh yeah! I love reading and writing poetry, and I am trying to work on a novel for my Senior project!
2: When asking for critiques on my anti-bullying novel, (Which I haven't finished) teachers often told me it was intense, especially with what the bullies did.

3: Yes, although I will admit, I have only been to a science and history museum in my state.
4: Yes. I read Frankenstein in 9th grade and have read my share of Shakespeare.
5: I do not. I will start reading up on what they are however.
6: I do. Although, I really don't like Country all that much! LOL
7: Yes. I tend to notice the small details of things.
8: I'm going to admit, I spend more time in my house then I do outside. Mainly because the neighborhood I live in, is a place where teen smokers and drinkers live, and I really don't want to be near those people.

9: I do not follow trends if that's what the question is asking, although I am a brony, and I see no shame in admitting that!
10: I usually try my best to do this, but after years of bullying it's really hard to be myself around the people who bullied me. I still do my best.
11: Yes, a lot of the times!
12: Sometimes yes, sometimes no, it often depends on what I'm thinking about or being asked.
13: I often don't!
14:Always!
15: A little of yes, a little of no.
16: This one's a little iffy for me. I am still trying to get over my Nyctophobia since childhood. As of now, I'm doing great, I just really have to stop reading so many creepypastas! :XD:
17: No, but it can get on my nerves!
