Transformers Vernacular by Leathurkatt-TFTiggy Transformers Vernacular by Leathurkatt-TFTiggy

Description:
My bro *CatalystSpark had suggested a while ago I put together a glossary of words Transformers use that differ from normal human lexicon, and ~pika reiterated that I should post something like this for people on DA. So, here it is! I originally started this list in May 2010, and now I think it's finally finished. I included terms for Transformer Biology that are necessary for any Transformer Medics to know, as well as slang, curses, and words in reference to their "religion" and beliefs. This is a HUGE file that spans 1000 pixels wide by 12000 pixels long. O.O HOLY CRAP! Yeah, there's a LOT of info there. XD

94 of the 107 terms listed are canon. As for the rest, 9 appear in canon but are not properly named (if at all), one is implied but not expressly shown, and the last 3 I added either to explain canon events/features or to give a more Cybertronian version of something. The vernacular is not fully complete apparently (I found additional terms I missed) but to add them I would have to split the list into cultural and anatomical terms. This thing is already huge. :faint:

The 9 that exist unnamed in canon:
Bio Interface Cable/Port is a canon body part as it exists but was never actually named or defined (seen in G1 when Optimus was giving life support to Elita One, though it was confirmed to exist and partially named in TFPrime)
Cyber Neural System/Cyber Tendril are also a canon body part as they exist but not completely named or defined
Dactyl/Dactylin/Dactylas are real world terms that apply anatomically to Transformers hands more accurately than "servos"
Glossia is another real world term for a feature that exists in canon it's not actually named, it is actively used in the fandom however
Denta is a canon body part not expressly named but the term is real world and accurate by its definition
Nano-Form was added to further define Holo-Form and the feature exists in movie canon but is not specifically named
Ped/Pedes is an applicable term for feet from real world instead of the inaccurate term "bases"
Positronic Core/Net general scifi term used across the board since Heinlein first coined it in his stories
Programming Sets again exists in canon but are not explicitly named or defined, though they do refer to specific programming in canon

The 1 that's implied:
Carbon Nanofiber Polymer Muscles is a real world term that fits in with the bio-mechanical structure of Transformers and is implied in canon but not expressly identified

The 3 I added:
"My Spark to yours" I made up to stand in for "I love you" since it made more sense "canonically"
Nano-Cells/Nano-Cellular Structure is a real world concept applicable to Transformers
Sparkling Chamber is a term and body part I created to explain the source of the pods and hatchlings from the movie verse

One item of note: contrary to TFA's habit of calling EVERYTHING in a Transformer's body a Servo, hands are NOT servos! One of many reasons I greatly dislike TFA, erroneous terminology as well as grotesque designs for the robots (my opinion, sorry). A servo (servomechanism) is actually a motorized joint, so the hand would be a collection of servos (joints), actuators (muscles), support struts (bones), and armor plates (skin), with fluid lines (circulatory system/blood) and neural sensory threads (nervous system). PLEASE do not call their hands "servos"?! That's why I included a more anatomically accurate term for them (Dactyls), as well as for their feet (pedes).

I thought Autobot was simply short for Autonomous Robot.

In a literal sense yes, but Optimus explicitly states "Autonimous Robotic Organism" in both the live action movies and in TF Prime. Thus the meaning given here.

However, that might just be the term for "Cybertronian." In Transformers Exodus when he was still Orion Pax, he says "We are Autonomous Robots" Which when simplified becomes "Autobot"

Fan Fics? Yeah, I wouldn't trust that too much. Many of those tend to be wholy inaccurate with the vernacular, thus why I generally don't read them.

Who knows? Maybe Optimus would make you the Autobot chefe scholar ^^

Actualy, I find you work very valuable. Not only as a Transformer fan, but also as an Antropologist.

Ohhh W-O-W :wow: I didn't think it was possible to organise all those this-and-that phrases and terms! And you did all this yourself??? About ‘‘Cybertronian/Cybertronic’’, I think of Cybertronian as referring to a native (i.e. a Transformer), while Cybertronic refers to a thing or a custom (like, Cybertronic battery, a battery from Cybertron)............... Do you think TFs could navigate magnetic lines of force like birds, and some other critters, do? I mean, the metal frames, kinda ideal for handling tiny changes in energy signatures, and they're always picking up energy signatures in Canon, to boot.

Also: You know what an integrated gate bipolar transistor is, and how they're connected? You an engineer or something?

**laughs** Thank you very much!

Actually, I think that's partly how they navigate both planetary and interstellar paths, by Geo-magnetism and stellar gravity wells. They can also detect the magnetic resonance hum of stars and planets, allowing them to identify star systems by their unique harmonic signatures, not unlike what NASA space probes do actually, just much more sensitive and precisely calibrated. **smiles** Thus how they are able to travel through galaxies in much the same way we use sign posts and streets to navigate cities.

**chuckles** One of many disciplines and subjects I have studied since I was a kid actually.

I KNEW IT!!! Yah, it makes sense......... a group of inter stellar travellers, who were made of metallic particles, would start learning to navigate the magnetic lines of force between planets. And I bet they could get a LOT of information from it, not just location, but the gravitational pull of the planet, density, maybe even some info on atmospheric composition........... a lot of different things, magnetism is really strange like that. I'm writing a paper on bioelectromagnetics, so I love it, but magnetism is kinda weird, too o.O :hmm: :plotting:

You know, while I'm working on this paper, a lot of times I've gotta wonder what it'd be like to navigate magnetic lines of force. I mean, do they actually travel in the way the illustrations show? When you walk through them, do they pass through you like you're nothing, or bend around you? Maybe both? I'm curious if critters that navigate by it can, like, feel it bend, or... Oh, I don't know. I should stop thinking about this silly stuff. I'll find out soon enough, anyway, if I'm right, and standing in an enclosure full of ionized particles, and rotating a magnetic field in it, will let you feel the changes in the magnetic field. Wait, I thought I was gonna stop talking/typing? Ohhh I need to stop flapping my digital lips! :giggle:

Actually, I can feel it myself. It both passes through you as well as warp and bend around you. You can feel a faint directional tug in one direction and the flow of the magnetic fields lets you follow the lines and keep track of where you are and where you are going. It's the reason I can't actually get lost, whether in the city or out in the woods. I've tried and I always find my way back by feel alone. Yes, you can feel changes and fluctuations in the magnetic fields around you, not just localized ones, but also those of the Earth and other planets around us, even that of our Sun and nearby stars. Why do you think Astrology is as accurate as it is when it's used correctly? It's based on Astronomy, Astrophysics, Hydrodynamics, Geomagnetism, and Biomagnetism, and how all these things affect us and the Earth.

Wait, I thought humans couldn't knowingly feel magnetism, under regular conditions? If there's enough of an electric field, it'll react to the magnetic field and you can feel the change, but that's it, isn't it? Oh, Astrology... I don't know how accorate it is, but I will say, because of my love for archaeology, I think there's more to it than most scientists let on. No way all those ancient cultures were just... wrong, no matter how primitive they were technology-wise!

Some people can, like me and others. It depends on the natural bioelectric capacitance they have. The higher it is, the more easily they can feel it. And you're right, especially considering that Astrology as a few thousand years of research behind it.
Reply
:iconkayivoyo:
Kayivoyo Featured By Owner Mar 4, 2012
I guess that makes sense, since people with higher bio-electric capacitance would have more loose electrons open for manipulation in a magnetic field. And yeah, I'm not so quick to brush off ancient sciences as myth and legend, I mean, if there really was nothing to them then where'd modern science come from?! Thin air? :lmao:

:O I'm so excited you posted this! I've had an AU Transformers fic mulling about my brain for a while but first getting into writing it I was thinking..."they wouldn't really use human terms for related parts of their anatomy...so wtf do I call x bit" ;A;

I want to get into writing it but first I gotta get a solid character design down too...drawing transformers let alone designing one is difficult already lol I cant even decide if I want my character to have regular eyes or the visor type eyes x.x More human vs less?! Wahhh! I did decide on the vehicle mode though XD [link]
