Tonal Composition – Still-Life Pencil (art class 1992)
I had an elective art class in college with an accounting major. This was my favorite of all the pieces I did for that class. The instructor would give us an assignment with several things we were to accomplish, then grade us on the result. This was one of the few still-life’s he set up, then we sat in a semi-circle around it and drew all of it or only part of it. I received a good grade on this even though it’s mostly mid-tones without much highlights or shadows. This was done in pencil. I took photos of all the still-life’s I did so I could compare them years later. The instructor teased me about the wire spool not being truly elliptical; I drew it “battered”. I told him that some people can’t draw a straight line, I can’t draw a circle! He laughed at that.
