Cybertron's Toxic Atmosphere by Leathurkatt-TFTiggy Cybertron's Toxic Atmosphere by Leathurkatt-TFTiggy

Description:
As Cybertron is a machine world with no organic life and in multiple continuities (particularly noted in TF Prime) the atmosphere is said to be quite toxic to organic life forms, I thought I would do a bit of poking around and see if I could figure out a probable atmospheric composition for Cybertron. I started with Earth's atmosphere as a base model, then looked at Titan, Venus, and Mars for additional comparisons, and finally looked at the likely common elements that might be found on Cybertron based on the probable makeup of the planet's surface and the robotic life forms living there. This is what I eventually came up with as a probable composition for Cybertron's atmosphere based on canon information and real world planetary models.

For a comparison, here's Earth, Titan, Mars, and Venus:

Earth's Atmosphere = Dry air contains roughly (by volume) 78.09% Nitrogen, 20.95% Oxygen, 0.93% Argon, 0.039% Carbon Dioxide, and small amounts of other gases. Air also contains a variable amount of Water Vapor, on average around 1%. Trace elements include Neon, Helium, Methane, Krypton, Hydrogen, Nitrous Oxide, Carbon monoxide, Xenon, Ozone, Nitrogen dioxide, Iodine, and Ammonia (NH3).

Titan's Atmosphere = The atmospheric composition in the stratosphere is 98.4% Nitrogen—the only dense, Nitrogen-rich atmosphere in the Solar System aside from the Earth's—with the remaining 1.6% composed of mostly of Methane (1.4%) and Hydrogen (0.1–0.2%).

Mars' Atmosphere = By far the predominant gas is Carbon Dioxide, making up 95.9 percent of the atmosphere's volume. The next 6 most abundant gases are Argon (2.0%), Nitrogen (1.9%), Oxygen (0.14%), Carbon Monoxide (0.07%), Water Vapor (0.03%) and Nitric Oxide (0.013%). Trace elements include Neon, Krypton, Formaldehyde, Xenon, Ozone, and Methane.

Venus' Atmosphere = The atmosphere of Venus is composed mainly of Carbon Dioxide (96.5%), along with a small amount of Nitrogen (3.5%) and other trace elements (Sulfur Dioxide, Argon, Water Vapor, Carbon Monoxide, Helium, Neon, Hydrogen Chloride, Hydrogen Fluoride).

This is great! This is really useful info for anyone writing a fanfiction for the Transformers universe. I've read, and even SEEN in G1, where a human goes to Cybertron and they are perfectly fine breathing the air. Any thoughts?

That was done for simplicity's sake for a kid's TV show. Now they're being more realistic about it, which is one thing I really like about TFPrime. Thus why I created this feature of what Cybertron's atmosphere might actually be like.

Y'know, part of me wonders if it's because of the War that the air is toxic, not Cybertron itself. I mean, Megs did inject Dark Energon into it.

Actually, the war would increase sulfur, carbon, and rust content on the surface as well as Carbon Monoxide, Sulfur Dioxide, Iron Oxide, and other more toxic compounds in the atmosphere, but not as much as one might think. The levels would only increase slightly and only in certain regions where open combat is active and prolonged. Plus, Dark Energon would not necessarily alter the chemical composition of the atmosphere any more than regular Energon does. At worse it would Ionize some parts of the atmosphere in much the same way that lightning does on Earth when its energy is discharged. Over time atmospheric movement would disperse many of the compositional shifts in the atmosphere since different parts of the surface will have different temperatures even without being in orbit around a star due to habitation of various regions with the heat given off the various bots and mechanimal chassis as well as sub-surface temperature fluctuations due to the flow of power from Energon conduits beneath the surface to power various structures both on and beneath the planet's surface.

Ah. On a random side note, how were the bots planning on repopulating the planet, since every dead one got caught in a Space Bridge explosion.

There are others who escaped the "death" of Cybertron in the mass evacuation, so to repopulate Cybertron they would simply send a signal letting the rest know it was safe to return home. With the dead cleared away it would make it easier to return home.

interesting concept and I like that you've compared the atmosphere to reality based models. One knit-pick though: Teflon isn't an element. It's the brand name for Polytetrafluoroethylene [link]

(I actually took the time to add up all the percentages and I'm pleased that they total 100 though I expected it to be slightly off by a fraction of a percent due to repeating decimals being rounded :XD: )

I realize that, but if I used Polytetrafluoroethylene no one would know what the hell I was talking about. XD

**chuckles** I'm careful about details like that.

lol, it wasn't the inclusion of "teflon" that got me; it was calling it an "element" :XD:

You could also have used the Superman III kryptonite favorite of "unknown element" :D

Technically it is. Teflon is the generally accepted common name (though a copyrighted brand name) for Polytetrafluoroethylene, just like Buckminsterfullerene (C60) is called a Bucky Ball.

I tend to prefer not using ambiguous terms and concepts with no clear definition. >.< They just annoy me.

yeah... but it's not an element. (C2F4)n
It's a chain of molecules (to the nth) made up of 2 Carbon atoms and 4 Fluorine atoms

any more than H2O is an element (it's not, despite what the ancients thought)

Elemental compounds, but that's splitting hairs. I was actually kind of tired when I wrote it and couldn't think of any lubricant polymers besides Teflon and spaced on the fact that I typed "element" rather than compound or polymer anyway. I already planned to rewrite that last bit with more things listed than just the one, but I wanted to get this up before too many days passed. I'll probably work on that little bit later tonight, though.
